Healthier Options in Vending — an Employer Resource

What is HOVER?

HOVER stands for 'Healthier Options in Vending - an Employer Resource'.

HOVER is a two phase research project that is investigating the availability of healthier food options in Tasmanian workplaces.   The project aims to educate employers about the importance of supplying healthier food options to their employees, and the benefits of this approach. In its initial phase, the project specifically targets the food options available in workplace vending machines.  HOVER is currently in the second project phase.

During Phase One, the project involved a series of consultations with vending machine suppliers, the food industry, employers and employees. This resulted in a number resources being developed to assist employers in switching to healthier food options in their workplace vending machines.

To date HOVER has seen the successful implementation of Healthier Vending in several sites across Tasmania.  Phase Two explores the various different healthier vending options currently available and site suitability for these.   Options include:

  • Mixed Vending: This provides a mix of dry processed (pre-packaged) products along with fresh options such as dairy and fruit.  This option is best suited to workplaces wanting healthier snack options, but does provide some meal options

  • Fresh Vending: This option provides an assortment of freshly made options including sandwiches, sushi, ready to heat meals and dairy and fruit options.  This is currently the healthiest available option for vending.

Feedback from trial sites indicates healthier vending as viable within Tasmania, being well received by all involved in trials, from employers, employees through to vending suppliers.

During this phase HOVER has enjoyed greater engagement with food industry, resulting in the identification of a wide range of healthier options for vending.

HOVER is currently open to expression of interest from workplaces or food industry who would like involvement in healthier vending trials being rolled out across the state.  Expressions of Interest (EOI) can be forwarded to Colette at hover@eatwelltas.org.au

For further information regarding the EOI process or healthier vending trials please contact Colette on (03) 6223 1266
